ICC Ready to Make a Decision on Postponing T20 World Cup 2020. After several sports events getting cancel, the cricket lovers are worrying that the coronavirus pandemic will impact the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia.
The mega event, which is scheduled from 18th October to 15th November, is under a cloud of uncertainty as to the country battles against the deadly virus. Australia Reliable Authority has reported over 2,000 cases of the disease, resulting in the closure of borders and a strict lockdown, which is likely to continue for an indefinite period.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) will hold a teleconference with its member boards on 29th March to decide the future of the T20 World Cup. It is worth mentioning that Cricket Australia has suspended all cricket activities until further notice.
While the event looks in doubt, Cricket Australia Chief, Kevin Roberts, is hopeful of staging the mega event as per the original schedule ‘to inspire the world through men’s cricket as the women’s cricketers did.
“We’re hoping that all forms of sport can be played again in a few weeks’ or a few months. None of us are experts in this situation obviously, we hope, we’re back in very much normal circumstances come October and November.”
ICC to hold video conference on 27 March to discuss the future course of actions(Coronavirus Outbreak)
The member nations of the International Cricket Council (ICC) will be engaged in a video conference on Friday to talk about contingency plans in the wake of global lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The high-profile ICC T20 World Cup scheduled in Australia from mid-October 2020 along with the bilateral Test series as a part of the World Test Championship schedule could be in for a rejig in case the lockdown/close continues for another 2 months.
One ICC Board member made it clear no final decision will be taken during Friday’s video conference.
“It’s more about an update on contingency planning at this stage. In the case of an extreme situation, there should be plan B and C ready. So we board members need to understand the options available,” the veteran administrator said.
“Obviously, the situation currently is very serious and COVID-19, and its implications are on the agenda. But if you think logically, World T20 is in October, and the final of World Test Championship is in June 2021. So we have time and no point in taking any decision in haste. No decisions expected on Friday. It’s more of a stock-taking,” he added.
If the lockdown continues beyond June, member nations will be forced to contemplate options about the bilateral series, which has points associated with World Test Championship.
Earlier, the biggest sporting event, Olympics, was postponed by a year following concerns over the preparations leading to the competition. The exciting thing is that the 2021 T20 World Cup is scheduled in India, and if this year’s event gets postponed, it will create a tricky situation for the ICC.
